Excerpt from The Visitor's Guide to Harvard University Take any horse car marked Harvard Square, or Harvard University, either at Bowdoin Square (Revere House), or at Park Square (Providence Station), and after a pleasant ride of thirty minutes you will arrive at the college. Before the visitor starts on his walk through the college he will, of course, wish to know something of its history. The college was founded in 1636 by vote of the General Court of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay and 400 was appropriated for the purpose. During the next year it was ordered that the college be established at Newtown, the name of which was soon changed to Cambridge, in recognition of the University in Cambridge, England, where many of the colonists had been educated. In 1638, John Harvard, a young clergyman who had but recently arrived in the colony, died and bequeathed to the college his library of 300 volumes, and about 700 pounds sterling.
